Two ways to improve my self-esteem immediately   (another three in the next episode!)

One of the things that worry me the most, is that people do not realize the real importance of self-esteem.

Every day I meet people who have a high potential but who have limited themselves in life because deep inside they do not consider themselves as great individuals.

If during elementary school or junior high-school they taught us to genuinely love ourselves the way they teach us about Geography or Algebra, more than half of the world´s problems would disappear.

Kinds of self esteem

There are two basic kinds of self-esteem.

  • the one built during childhood with love and the positive teachings of our parents or tutors,
  • and the one built by ourselves when we start getting conscious of our real being during our youth.

Number one is very important because when it is well developed it makes things much easier in life. However, lots of people, for one reason or another, did not grow up in the adequate environment as to be allowed or encouraged to construct a solid love for themselves.

Luckily, there is Number two; this one depends only on us, as it starts developing during our youth and it is linked to will and discipline.

When we are kids and our parents constantly reinforce that we are the best in the world, we firmly believe their words. But as we grow older we come in need of tangible evidence of our worth. These events are the objectives and targets we achieve on our own.

Low adult self-esteem is generally the result of an under-developed first esteem during our early years. This in turn drives us into a mental block and stops us from building a good esteem and self-image based on our achievements.

Picture this as an atrophied muscle that must be rehabilitated. That is why one of the ways to begin this rehabilitation process is to exercise our motivation mechanisms; discipline and will, visualizing not only our goals, but also how to achieve them.

Repairing a broken self-esteem requires a long therapeutic process and a strong will to heal from the very inside.

However, this starts elsewhere there are some immediate strategies to feel better about ourselves; we can set out right now:

1.- Make a timetable of activities toward your goals:

  • Most surely there is something you can do today to get closer to your life objectives, and realizing that you have made the first move, will make you feel much better with yourself. Remember that people are more efficient if we stick to a routine of small daily actions, which eventually will turn into great deeds.
  • Rome was not built in a day”, so for instance, instead of feeling bad because you are overweight, learn to base your self-esteem in other aspects that are under your immediate control, like eating healthy today and going out for some exercise.

2.- Groom yourself:

  • It is important to differentiate between self-esteem and vanity or egocentricity. Self-esteem comes from a deep feeling of value that frames us as humans, and vanity is anchored in looks and purchasing power. There are highly egocentric people with very low self-esteem.
  • Yet, we can feel better when we accept that we deserve to care about ourselves and show the best of us.
  • When we get tidied up and groom ourselves, in an unconscious way we tell our brain that we are about to do something important. To begin everyday with this implied command, we are predisposed to trust ourselves a little more.
  • This routine of getting ready is different for each person, but in practical terms, think on how you fix yourself for an appointment or a very exciting event, and remember that each day of your life is full of opportunities and it is worth to feel enthusiastic.
